The Altruist

Sheryl and Charity became fast friends in nursing school.

They were there for each other through exams, boyfriends, first jobs, and eventually marriages. When Sheryl and her husband Alex discovered they were pregnant, Charity was the first to know. She was obviously named baby Justice’s Godmother.

As a baby, Justice was always fussy. His parents thought it was normal until they noticed his jaundiced skin. He was admitted to the hospital and had his first surgery when he was only two months old. His health started to decline after that surgery, and he was soon added to the waitlist for a new liver.

Watching Justice and Sheryl struggle, Charity wondered if she might be a match for a living liver donation. When they discovered she was, Charity didn’t think twice.

“I wanted all the suffering and sadness to stop. I wanted my friend to be planning her son’s birthday parties, play dates and future. More than anything, I wanted our kids to grow up together.”

Justice’s recovery was slow, but there were sweet moments every day.

Sheryl and Alex remember the image of Justice laughing as he rolled through the halls in a red wagon with a fistful of Mylar balloons. When he was upset, his dad would sing songs for him.

Because of Charity’s generous donation, Justice regained his health and grew into an active, happy kid who loved playing soccer.

Now a healthy teenager, Justice loves acting in his high school’s theatre productions, hanging out with his brother, and volunteering with Donate Life.

Sheryl reflects on her best friends gift, “When doctors give you a life expectancy for your child, your perception of time changes. Dreams suddenly have expiration dates. It’s totally cliché but transplantation gives you a second chance.”

Sheryl and Charity are still best friends, and because of Charity’s donation they have been able to watch their children grow up together, just like they always planned.
